Wondering how to keep your lawn looking lush all year round? If you’re looking for seasonal lawn care tips for Australian lawns, you’re in the right place.
In this article (part one of two), we’ll cover how to keep your lawn looking green and healthy in Spring and Summer! Let’s get into it.
Seasonal Lawn Care Tips for Spring
When it comes to taking care of your lawn, Spring is most likely the season where you’ll be kept busy outside.
Here are some seasonal lawn care tips for Spring:
- Dethatching or scarifying. What this means is removing thatch buildup from your lawn in order to give new grass shoots room to grow. Ah yes, but what is thatch you ask? Good question. Thatch is a layer of intertwined living and dead stems, leaves and roots that accumulate between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath.
- Overseeding. If you forgot to do this in Autumn, you might find that come Spring you have some grass thinning in areas (or even bald patches). To rectify this issue simply sprinkle some new seeds over your lawn (don’t forget to moisten the soil first).
- Fertilising. In colder months your lawn becomes nutrient deficient, so come Spring you’ll need to “feed” your lawn with fertiliser. Remember, not all fertilisers are created equally, so it’s best to speak to a professional to find the right food for your lawn.
- Watering. Depending on where you live, you might need to water your lawn more often in Spring, if you’re on the drier side of the Australian climate. Be careful not to overwater however, it’s always best to test how moist the soil is before getting too heavy handed with your hose.
Seasonal lawn care tips for Summer
Now that the weather is getting warmer, let’s discuss how to keep your lawn looking lush in Summer.
Seasonal lawn care tips for Summer:
- Mow your lawn regularly. This is the peak growing time for grass, so you’ll need to get the mower out more frequently than other seasons of the year.
- Keep your lawn hydrated. Depending on how often it rains in Summer where you are, you may need to water your lawn more often in Summer. Consider your soil and grass type to determine your watering frequency.
- Weed control. It can be tricky to use weed killer in the Summer as you may end up burning your grass. Best to keep on top of your weeds and remove them manually.
